10 Questions: Garrett Leight
1. What was the very special moment when you decided to become an eyewear designer?
I never really decided to become an eyewear designer. I actually don’t even describe myself as an eyewear designer today. I think I focus more on the moment I knew I wanted to create my own brand. Eyewear design is a collective, in which I rely on my retail employees, my co-designer Elena Doukas and my friends, who inspire me. Mostly my job consists of managing people and inspiring the vision for the brand and our future and where I want us to go. So I never really decided to become an eyewear designer. I decided to open a store in Venice because there were no other opticians on that street. Than I decided to start my own brand because I wanted my own brand.
2. What is the biggest challenge for an eyewear label?
Creating a brand identity and DNA that people actually want to be a part of. Most people don’t care about half the things that the majority of brands think their customers care about. If you can’t create a demand for the brand by combining all the things that matter, than no one cares about the product. Not enough people anyways.

The idea of being the best and the opportunity to change the industry forever. I’m mostly inspired by a chance to fix problems.

8. Working hours per week?
Well there’s 168 hours in a week. I sleep about 50 hours a week. So when I’m sleeping I’d say about 40 hours of that is deep sleep and the other 10 I’m dreaming about work. That leaves 118 hours while I am awake. I’d say about half of that I spend thinking about sex, food, and sports. So thats about 69 hours of work in a week.
