In February 2018 the Austrian Space Forum (OeWF) is paving the way to answer that question with a series of field simulations and experiments in the Omani desert, in eyewear supplied by ic! berlin.

The AMADEE-18 Mars Analogue Mission will study equipment, procedures and work flows under the extreme Martian-like conditions of the deserts of Dhofar, the largest governorate in the Sultanate of Oman. As pioneers of the eyewear industry ic! berlin knows all about breaking new ground and exploring new territories. Their feather-light, resilient, screwless glasses redefined what eyewear could be over twenty years ago and today they are the perfect choice for the analogue astronauts to shield their eyes from everything the Earth’s atmosphere can throw at them.

During the simulations the analogue astronauts from the OeWF will be wearing 45-kilogram robotic spacesuits equipped with its own power supply, communication systems and all manner of sensors. In choosing sunglasses to protect their eyes from the desert sun it was vital they not be weighed down any further. With an average weight of around 20 grams, ic! berlin’s rubberized sunglasses are the only frames that can withstand the harsh conditions of the Omani desert.

The next step is to see how they fare on Mars.
