What originally started as a form of online journal writing has long-since matured into a personalized variation of content marketing, not to mention an attractive medium for sponsors. Bloggers lend an air of authenticity to their subjects. They create a halo of independent endorsement around products and communicate with their followers at eye level.

As of late, the eyewear business has also seen the rise of bloggers who keep their fans abreast on the latest brands, designs, trends, and tradeshows. On our recent visit to opti tradeshow in Munich we made the acquaintance of Jennifer Bitsche, the Austrian blogger behind the dedicated eyewear blog which has been online for about a year now.

What started as a sheer hobby has now evolved into a part-time job for Jennifer, who has experienced the progression of blogging in the industry first-hand. Only a year ago, she says, most brands would not cooperate with bloggers. Since then, the industry has opened up and the importance of bloggers is increasing. Nevertheless, making a name for yourself takes persistence and a constant output of words with a unique angle. “For me it’s always important to be able to feel the history behind a brand. The philosophy, the people behind the company, and of course, the eyewear design. I’m trying to distil all of this into my writing.”

From Munich, Copenhagen, to New York, Jennifer has become a constant presence at all important tradeshow events in our industry. She can be found roaming the halls wielding her camera, laptop, and smartphone, always keeping her followers informed about the latest scoop. Asked about the trends that will have a formative effect on the eyewear industry in the near future, Jennifer sees strong growth potential in the independent eyewear scene. And she also predicts exciting changes in the use of materials. Keeping a hands-on approach to eyewear, she helps her husband and his dad in their optical shop – her second part-time job – whenever she is not roaming the globe blogging for faceprint.
